Shirley Ree Smith is ahving her cased looked at in the light of better science and a better understanding of shaken baby syndrome. One of the experts in the article says that her case would never come to trial today. This case again points out the problem with “expert” witnesses who make non scientific claims. The Coroners statement at the original trial would be laughable if it were not so tragic in it’s impact; he stated the baby “was shaken or slammed so forcefully that his brainstem was fatally — but invisibly — damaged”.
